The company has undertaken several measures to safeguard against its operations or products hurting the ecosystem. Recently, the company through its founder, Ryan Emmons, announced that it would embrace degradable plastic bottles next year. Presently, the company is using bottles made from 100% recyclable materials. Emmons states that the degradable bottles take a shorter time to decompose compared to traditional plastic bottles. As Waiakea Water will be the first company to utilize degradable containers, it is expected that many other companies will follow suit.
To achieve the degradable bottles, Waiakea used TimePlast’s additive which is capable of nano-degrading plastics. The TimePlast’s additive is the only patented additive for the nano-degradation of plastics in America. Experts claim that the additive is capable of reducing the lifespan of regular plastics by 100 times. One pound of the additive can alter over 1000 pounds of non-degradable plastics to become degradable plastics.
Emmons, who is also the CEO of Waiakea Water has been involved in developing the degradable plastics. In the process, Emmons learned a lot regarding degradable and non-degradable plastics. He suggests that the concept of degradable plastics is beginning to take shape now as opposed to the past because of two things. According to him, scientists have been focusing on making plastics better and stronger and not weak. Also, many companies have attempted to make plastics biodegradable instead of degradable.

In addition to plans to introduce degradable bottles, Waiakea Water has taken care of the environment in several other ways. For example, the company is carrying out reforestation in the Mauna Loa. Also, the company is working with leading emission experts to reduce its harmful emissions to zero. It is also known for its efforts to enable some communities in Africa to access clean water and basic sanitation. The company is no. 414 in the 2017’s list of the Inc. Magazine.
